Fessor's Big City Band • Time Out For Blues

Although Fessor's Big City Band is best known for its spirited New Orleans jazz performances, trombonist Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen was always greatly interested in blues and other styles. The Time Out for Blues sampler mostly features blues performances drawn from his group's 1973-1984 recordings. Some of the numbers are Chicago blues-oriented, some are swinging blues, and others are boogaloos, funky blues, or R&B-ish. There are hints here and there of the group's roots in trad jazz, but the emphasis is on the blues playing with some vocals along the way from guests Gene "Mighty Flea" Connors and Champion Jack Dupree. Although the horn players get their spots, the key soloists are several pianists and guitarist Claus Nielsen. A certain sameness is felt after a few selections (despite the CD covering an 11-year period), but fans of rocking blues will enjoy this collection.

This CD is a ”greatest hits” collection of recordings by Ole ”Fessor” Lindgreen’s Big City Band, made between 1973 and 1984. This heavily blues- and rhythm & blues-oriented collection (15 tunes/72 min.) includes four original tunes by band members and a couple of soul numbers - ”Hi Heel Sneakers” and ”Why Am I Treated So Bad?” – along with the rest of the tasty repertoire. The musicians are among Denmark’s finest jazz and blues musicians, including the virtuoso trumpet work of Finn Otto Hansen, the burning, soulful tenor sax of Steen Vig, the funky driving beat of drummer Thorkild Møller and the exuberant trombone-playing of Fessor, himself. There are also two famous guests on the CD: ”Mighty Flea” Connors on trombone, and three vocal tunes by the famous blues performer Champion Jack Dupree. Although some of this music was recorded thirty years ago, the great musicianship and enthusiasm - plus the fine, blusey repertoire – make this timeless music that swings like crazy. The music on this CD will prove irresistible to blues, rhythm & blues and jazz fans.

Other than the opening "Doo-Wah-Doo" and the closing "Cherry Red," both of which include guitarist Thomas Muller, bassist Ole Skipper Mosgard and drummer Thorkild Moller, this is a set of unaccompanied piano and vocals by the great veteran Jay McShann.
The music is typical for McShann, with veteran blues (such as "After Hours" and "How Long Blues"), the standard "Ace in the Hole," and some swinging boogie-based originals, plus "Yardbird Waltz."

An excellent trombonist from Denmark, Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen has been an important bandleader in Scandinavia since 1968. Tired of playing in so many similar and predictable trad jazz ensembles, in 1968 he formed the Big City Band, an outfit that kept New Orleans and 1920's jazz as its base but has been open to swing, early r&b and even bop influences. Through the years the group has often collaborated with visiting and touring Americans including Alton Purnell, Champion Jack Dupree, Louis Metcalf, Happy Caldwell, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Bud Freeman, Benny Waters, Franz Jackson, Ralph Sutton, Snub Mosley, Sunnyland Slim, Budd Johnson, Carrie Smith, Earl Warren, Dicky Wells, Sammy Price, Doc Cheatham, Claude Williams, Gene "Mighty Flea" Connors, George Kelly, Al Casey and most notably Wild Bill Davison. With such fine sidemen (in the early days) as trumpeter Finn Otto Hansen and tenor-saxophonist Steen Vig Hansen, Fessor and his Big City Band have been together for over 30 years, recording quite frequently for Storyville.

In 1968, Danish trombonist Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen formed a flexible group (his Big City Band) capable of playing anything from Dixieland to mainstream and early R&B-ish blues. Through the years, his ensemble had the opportunity to work with many touring and visiting American stars. This CD sampler is comprised of previously released material; two songs apiece with either cornetist Wild Bill Davison, pianist Sammy Price, tenorman George Kelly, trombonist Gene "Mighty Flea" Connors, pianist/vocalist Jay McShann, pianist/vocalist Champion Jack Dupree or guitarist Al Casey as guests. In addition, there is one number with violinist Claude Williams and two in which the Big City Band is joined by trumpeter Doc Cheatham, clarinetist Herb Hall and bassist John Williams. Most of the selections are quite exciting, particularly Davison's "Louisiana," the underrated Kelly's "Crazy Eddie," "Jumpin' With McShann" and "Afer Theatre Jump" with Claude Williams. Although the original complete sessions are naturally preferred, this readily available CD is easily recommended in the meantime.

Thanks to Fessor’s long-time friendships with many top swing and trad jazz stars like Wild Bill Davison, the musical communication and overall atmosphere on this CD is greatly enhanced, and the musicians really swing together. Fessor’s trombone style is warm, and robust, and his arrangements are simple and well constructed. The music always sounds fresh, thanks both to Fessor’s deep attraction to a variety of musical styles, and to his choice of a relatively unusual repertoire. There are great performances by special American guest artists Claude Williams on violin, Herb Hall on clarinet, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, and Wild Bill Davison on cornet, plus Danish Tenor saxophonist Bent Jædig. This 65-minute CD is compiled from five recording sessions in Denmark with Ole “Fessor” Lindgreen and (mostly) his Big City Band, from 1978-1981. Eight of the 15 numbers are Fessor originals, six are standards, plus one gospel classic.

Fessor's Big City Band • Final Call

During the 35 years of Fessor's Big City Band, the group was often tagged as a Dixieland or New Orleans band. Although the spirited group did play some trad classics and recorded with Wild Bill Davison, trombonist Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen was always much more interested in performing swing, R&B, blues, and more modern styles of jazz. In 2003 he turned 65 and decided to break up the band, so Final Call is its last studio recording. The three-horn sextet is joined on a few numbers by violin, clarinet, and organ or accordion. The music includes a catchy version of Charles Mingus' "My Jelly Roll Soul" (the closest that the band comes on this set to New Orleans jazz), a thoughtful piano tribute to Jelly Roll Morton ("Ferdinand"), and several blues, including the jazz waltz "Elith's Farm." The music can appeal to a large audience including fans of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, R&B-ish jazz, and blues. All in all, this is a fine closing chapter for a difficult-to-classify group.
